Forward Thinking Research Symposium

  • Each year, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) showcases the exciting research being done at Marquette. In celebrating research across campus, the ORSP Forward Thinking Research Symposium provides opportunities to learn more about work being done in other disciplines and fosters professional skills for students. Unlike traditional conferences, where researchers convey the results of work that has been completed, the Forward Thinking presentations focus on projects that will take place in the next 6–12 months.

MU Faculty, Staff and Students came together for year's event, on Tuesday Nov. 28th.

Thank you to all who participated and/or attended this year! A total of 29 research teams gave five-minute oral presentations of their projects and 17 of those had posters displayed. Overall, 69 Marquette individuals were involved (28 faculty and 41 students) from 15 departments within five Colleges/Schools.

  •

The following three oral presentations will receive $500 awards for their work:

The award sponsored by the Office of Research and Innovation is:

Green Stormwater Infrastructure Filter for Removing Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus

    Student:  Benjamin Bodus

Faculty:  Walter McDonald, Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Stormwater runoff causes issues for cities in terms of volume and water quality. One issue is the inadequate removal of dissolved phosphorus from stormwater using current engineering practices. This research aims to better address this problem using a green infrastructure end of pipe filter.

The award sponsored by the Institute for Women’s Leadership is:

Positive Thinking Training Intervention to Empower Latinx Women and Students of Color to Enhance their Leadership Abilities and Resiliency

Student:  Olivia Eck, Karen Nakhla, Avery Anderson

Faculty:  Abir Bekhet, Nursing; Norah Johnson, Nursing

Positive thinking and resiliency are vital skills for nurse leaders. Diverse nurses face challenges as leaders and as nurses and there is a lack of diverse representation in leadership roles. Positive thinking training intervention deemed to be effective in many studies. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a positive thinking training (PTT) intervention on nursing students’ leadership abilities, resiliency, and positive thinking skills.

The award sponsored by the Latinx Research Community is:

Well-Being in Times of Stress: A qualitative exploration of Latinx caregivers’ experiences in the NICU/CICU

    Student:  Elizandra Sandoval

Faculty:  Lisa Edwards, Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology

Little research exists about the unique experiences of Latinx caregivers while their babies are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). Using a qualitative approach, we plan to explore the experiences of 12-15 Latinx caregivers' to understand their experiences, resources, and needs. This project will contribute to concrete recommendations for hospital settings, as well as the field of perinatal mental health.
